Solar PV Design Engineer

Who we are looking for:
The Solar PV Project Engineer job will provide engineering services for solar PV projects ranging in scale from small commercial to large utility (20kW-20MW+). These services include designing and drafting, energy performance modeling, and site inspections, among others. As part of the SGC Power Engineering team, this position will support SGC Power projects and clients at all stages of development.

In addition to technical knowledge, the position demands excellent written and verbal communication to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical audiences. The position will have a high amount of client interaction and requires a high degree of professionalism.

The prospective Solar PV Project Engineer must have a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical or electrical engineering from an ABET accredited college or university and at least 5 years of relevant engineering experience in the solar PV industry.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Design solar PV systems ranging in scale from small commercial to utility scale including civil, structural, mechanical and electrical aspects utilizing AutoCAD and PVsyst, among other design tools
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary team of engineers and equipment manufacturers to provide construction-ready plans and details for installations
  • Provide solar technical consulting expertise to clientele as needed to address immediate needs or long-term strategies
  • Conduct site visits to prospective project locations for project feasibility assessments
  • Conduct engineering inspections at sites with active construction or recently completed project for quality control and progress reporting
  • Create and maintain project documentation related to project design and development
  • Communicate with project development and project management teams to coordinate design requirements and scheduling

What you’ll need to know:

  • Knowledge of construction processes and practices in electrical, civil and structural trades
  • Knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code, International Building Code, International Fire Code and other
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD drafting and Trimble SketchUp software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects and tasks

We would like you to know:

  • Training and experience using PV performance modeling software such as PVsyst
  • Solar PV design experience, NABCEP Solar PV Installation Professional certification or Entry Level certification preferred

Education, Training and Other:

  • Four-year college degree from an accredited university
  • NABCEP Certification
  • OSHA 10 training
  • Must be permitted to work in the US

What you’ll be doing:

  • Create requirements documents, schedules, cost estimates, and other key information related to client projects with input from business development, engineering, and construction staff
  • Participate in the review of contract documents for client projects including the creation of a requirements document, deliverables list, and other project management related items
  • Provide project management consulting expertise to clientele, as needed, to address immediate needs or long-term strategies
  • Manage contractors who are constructing solar PV systems ranging in scale from small commercial to utility scale utilizing MS Project and other software tools
  • Conduct construction progress inspections at sites before, during and after active construction for quality control and progress reporting
  • Coordinate with Owner and Host to support project financial incentive and milestone requirements, including independent engineering inspections and documentation requests.
  • Create and maintain project documentation related to the delivery of a project including bids, construction, and project close-out.

What you’ll need to know:

  • Experience working with local permitting authorities during a typical project development and construction schedule.
  • Proven project reporting of financial, work and schedule progress
  • Organizational and process-oriented skills to clearly maintain project documentation, correspondence, and related files
  • Familiarity with industry standard project management methods such as Project Management Professional (PMP) best practices and other similar best practices.
  • Ability to review and understand multi-trade construction drawings and specifications, as well as construction best practices across and array of trades, including surveying, civil, structural, thermal and moisture protection, and electrical construction.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Excel, and other similar software.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects and tasks

We would like you to know:

  • Knowledge of construction methods and means in electrical, civil and structural trades
  • Risk management best practices including risk analysis matrix, mitigation techniques, and other relevant information.
  • OSHA and other federal, state and local safety practices to allow audits of site activities
  • Solar PV project management experience plus NABCEP Solar PV Installation Professional certification or Entry Level certification

Education, Training and Other:

  • Four-year college degree from an accredited university
  • OSHA 10 training
  • Must be permitted to work in the US
